Great Tree Massacre

Yesterday, we brought in a few guys to remove all the oak trees in our yard as well as clear out the overgrown area that will be our future vegetable garden.  First off, some before pictures taken on Thursday from the roof of the house:

They came early Friday morning, five guys and tons of equipment.  The first thing to come out was the Bobcat, drove straight to the back to clear up all the overgrowth and anything that would block the trees they were cutting.

Once the Bobcat moved most of the major stuff out of the way, in came the big toys.  They brought in a log Truck and a decent sized chipper, and began to butcher the trees.

Starting from the back, they chopped down the trees and ground down the branches.  They managed to fill the back of the log truck with trunks, fill up the chipper truck twice and break two teeth on the stump grinder due to metal in the stumps.  But they did get 17+ trees down in one day, giving us plenty of entertainment throughout the day.

When they were done with the trees in the back, they had the last two trees along the road to deal with.  This task required a Cherry Picker:

At the end of the day, this is what our yard looks like:

Now we have a blank slate to work with, along with a great deal of fire wood to chop up, wood chips to spread and enough empty space to burn any left over waste wood.  We're already starting to set up the vegetable garden ad greenhouse, and took measurements for the future dog run.  It may look barren now, but soon enough this yard will become a great place to be in.

This is What Happens...

Any Questions?

Catfish & potato chips...Oh My!!

We had some catfish nuggets sitting in the freezer for the longest time and decided to actually eat some of it.  I wanted to fry it, but didn't have some of the common ingredients at hand and had no desire to go out and get them.  So we improvised with potato chips.  Making an egg wash by mixing a little milk with some eggs somewhat recently laid by The Girl, I crunched up the potato chips, dipped the cat fish in the egg wash then the chips ad into the pan they went.

They came out looking quite pretty and had a nice taste to them.  The thing about catfish is that, when cooked right, they are very tender and practically melt with each bite.  And as per tradition with anytime something is fired, the leftover egg wash gets mixed with the leftover breading (potato chips) and fried up into (what my sisters would call it) Puffy Things...Yum!

Tetsu and Miyu Getting Along

The relationship between Tetsu and Miyu started off pretty bumpy.  For the first few weeks Miyu lived with us, Tetsu wanted her out.  But slowly he is starting to come around and accept her as part of the family.

Lately, Tetsu gets this desire to kind of try to swallow Miyu's muzzle, without really making contact.  It usually happens when he is excited or in a good mood, and doesn't end negatively.  Also in this video is Tetsu's first attempt at playing with Miyu in the house, his elbow biting around 00:12.  He has wrestled and played with her at the dog park and outside, and it makes me excited that he is starting to do so at home.

With the coming of Spring comes new surprises

The weather is starting to warm, the sun lasts longer, and the chickens are enjoying it.  Today as I was giving them some greens, one of the Eater Eggers left me a nice gift.

It may be hard to tell, but the egg is a nice pastel green color.  Here's to hoping that they leave me some more good surprises this week.
